Hello everyone! I don’t know about you but I am a collector of fonts. I love fonts and get them from everywhere on the internet. I have so many cute ones that I finally decided to do something with them. By using my Silhouette and the fabulous colors of cardstock I came up with this colorful back to school layout.
For the letters, you will need:
- Die cutting machine or scissors
- Various fonts
- Various colors of 100# cardstock
For the background:
- Pop-Tone Sweet Tooth 100 lb. cover for the background
- Paints or mists in coordinating colors
- Gesso (optional)
Other supplies:
To begin, choose out your favorite fonts. There are many ways to accomplish the cutting of the letters. The way I did it was by using my Silhouette software. I chose the fonts I wanted and used the alpha tool to enter each letter in. The letters are sized to about 1.5x2 inches. I then cut them out. If you do not have a cutting machine there is a simple alternative. Choose the fonts that you want and size them to the same size in a blank document. Print out the alphabet. Using your scissors or a craft knife, cut each letter out in the color of your choice. I tried to plan ahead with my colors and do at least 2 of each color. This made it so that I could attempt to space the colors out to make it more pleasing to the eye.
For the background, I used the Pop-Tone Sweet Tooth cardstock. This is the perfect paper for doing mixed media. The paper is smooth and very thick. I used Vicki Boutin watercolors to sprinkle coordinating paint colors on the background. I did not prep my paper with anything and it held up great with no warping or tearing or seep through. If you are concerned you could add a thin layer of gesso to prime the background.
Next, I laid out my letters. I played for a bit until I got the letters to frame my photo nicely. It took a little bit of moving around to make sure the colors were separated. When I was finally happy with the placement I used the Zig Glue Pen. This was the easiest way to get all of the delicate pieces of the letters to stick down. To finish I added a few enamel dots around for some dimension. I chose to do my journaling around the outer edge of the layout instead of doing a doodle border. I love how it really pulls the whole layout together.
