Birthdays are one of those celebrations that come around once a year but that I struggle to document. I’m always busy hosting the party so the pictures I get are full of movement, backs of heads, and crazy colors. I decided the best way to combat that was to embrace it. So I chose a cake picture and decided to make a cake. Using cardstock colors that you can find in the photo really helps your layout feel cohesive.
To start, you will need:
- Cardstock Warehouse Cardstock Papers
- Pop-Tone Banana Split 100 lb. cover
- Pop Tone Limeade 100 lb. cover
- Pop-Tone Blu Raspberry 100 lb. cover
- Pop-Tone Grape Jelly 100 lb. cover
- Pop-Tone Razzle Berry 100 lb. cover
- Pop-Tone Sweet Tooth White 100 lb. cover
- cutting machine or punches
- paper trimmer or scissors
- tape runner
- glue gun
- Glue Dots
- Photo
- Optional embellishments:
- Alpha for title
- Embroidery floss
- Needle
- 8 in. doily
To start, choose the order of your colors for your cake layers. Use your paper trimmer or scissors to cut the following 4 rectangles :
- 5 in. x 2.5 in.
- 6 in. x 2.5 in.
- 7 in. x 2.5 in.
- 8 in. x 2.5 in.
Use a 4 in. x 6 in. piece of the remaining paper with your cutting machine or punches to create your confetti topping. I used a free circle cut file I found online to cut various sized circles. I then used heart punches to add some different shapes.
The next step is assembling your layout. I chose to put my cake layers in a wonky shape by angling the rectangles until I liked the configuration. The bottom layer should be straight. Use your tape runner to adhere to the background cardstock. Using your glue gun, add the confetti to your cake. Be sure to shake your layout to knock any loose confetti free. Use Glue Dots to fill in any holes in the confetti.
Last, mat your photo on some of the remaining cardstock. I chose to use the cardstock that didn’t have a cake layer (Grape Jelly) and a lighter color (Banana Split) to help the photo pop. Add a title and additional embellishments. I chose to stitch a purple cake stand and add a doily to the bottom of the cake. The title and my journaling fit perfectly in the cake layers.
The process video shows you how I created this layout step-by-step. Check it out!
