I love decorating my fireplace throughout the year, but my summer decorations are definitely lacking. I wanted to dress it up a bit and thought paper flowers are the perfect way to accomplish the look I was going for!
I started with a color palette I found on Pinterest. It had lots of reds, oranges and pinks with a touch of deep purple. Once I had a direction to go in, I chose all of my Cardstock Warehouse colors. The fun thing about this project is there really are no wrong colors to choose, but I loved having a wide variety for my flowers, so I picked nine colors to complete my project. There are a ton of different cardstock and scrapbooking papers to choose from here at Cardstock Warehouse so you could come up with your own unique combinations to get the look you want pretty easily!
The next thing I did was draw out my cut file. I had a general idea of the look I was going for, so I sketched everything out in Procreate. You can grab this cut file for free here!
Once I uploaded the cut file into Cricut Design Space, I roughly laid out a plan on how big I wanted my flowers and how I wanted them layered.
Once I had the flowers sized the way I liked them, I cut out all of the flowers in the colors I listed above.
While my flowers were being cut out, I took the time to paint my wooden skewers. You can use wooden dowels as well. But I found 100 skewers at the Dollar Tree and they looked great once painted!
Once the flower pieces were all cut out in all of my cardstock colors, I started putting them together. I didn’t have a method for this, just whatever I thought looked best together.
I adhered all of the flowers together with foam adhesive to give everything more dimension and life. I also folded up some petals or gave some petals creases to add to the look.
Once all of the flowers were put together, I attached them to the skewers with hot glue. Since I am placing mine on my mantel, I didn't have to worry about the back. If you need yours to be double-sided, you can glue another of the same flower onto the back side and "sandwich" the skewer in between.
Then it was just a matter of placement. You could use any method of displaying your flowers (a pot, a box, etc.), but since I was already at the Dollar Tree to get my skewers, I picked up some paper lunch bags and some floral foam. Then I just folded down my bags to the desired height and cut the foam in half to fit. I finished the bags off with some twine wrapped around and tied in a bow.
And done!
I can’t wait to see how everyone uses this cut file. It would work well for scrapbook layouts and custom greeting cards too!
