Light Up Jukebox Father's Day Card

One of the coolest memories of my childhood is going with my father to work on the weekends. My father sold jukeboxes, pinball machines, and arcade games in the 80s and 90s. His office (and our home) were filled with everything from Ms. Pac Man and candy cranes, to bubble hockey tables. Still today, my parents have a Black Onyx Wurlitzer Jukebox in their living room. I remember dancing to the jukebox on my parents bleached white wood floor in the 90s with my bestie neighbor across the street.

One of the most notable features of a Wurlitzer is its “Bubble Tubes.” A solvent with an amber colored dye fills these tubes, which when heated causes large bubbles. These tubes are surrounded by lighted colored plastics on the door which rotate in a variety of colors - red/coral, pale yellow, lime green, pale plum and orange. With Father’s Day around the corner, I wanted to get started on an awesome Father’s Day Card featuring my Dad’s prized jukebox. 

Here's what you'll need to make one...

Supplies: 

• Cardstock Warehouse Cardstock Papers
• Mirror Collection Gun Metal, Black and Red
• Stardream Quartz and Gold Metallic
• Colorplan Bright White
• Electronic Cutting Machine & Jukebox Cutting File (Design Space)
• The original design (#MF02AE0) was modified for this project.  My modified version is available here.  
• Ink & Ink Blending Tools: Tangerine, Lime, Coral, Corn, Plum
• Bone Folder
• Zig Glue Pen
• Optional (for light up version):
• Thin Copper Tape & Coin Cell Battery
• Chibitronics LED stickers (I used orange, pink and green)
• Foam Tape Strips .125” wide 
• Metal Piercing Tool (or similar paper piercer)

I started by downloading the Jukebox card template from Design Space and deciding on my color palette and modified design. I used Colorplan Bright White for the cardbase and for the panel to place the lights on. I used the Stardream Quartz cardstock for the panels where the bubble tubes would be displayed, because inking on Stardream produces just the effect I needed to mimic the colored plastic tubes. For the jukebox’s hardware, I selected Mirror Collection Gun Metal cardstock. I decided the main parts of the jukebox should be done in Mirror Collection as well, but in Black to mimic the black onyx lacquer on my dad’s jukebox. I also added some accents in the Red mirror cardstock, and two very tiny accents in the Gold Stardream. The Cricut project I made can be found here for Cricut users.  

I decided to make the card light up when the center grill is pressed. Since this involves creating a light up panel, I videotaped my entire process building the card so you could follow along in my how-to video to make it easier!  

I love how this turned out, and I can't wait to give it to my dad! Looks just like the real thing, right?
