DIY Teacher Appreciation Pencil Topper

What a cute, quick project for your child to do for that favorite teacher of theirs.  Have them create a few cardstock paper pencil toppers that they can put into a lit up jar or a mug.  Have them stamp the sentiment, Thank You, on a couple of them or all of them.

GETTING STARTED

I found this cute jar that looks like filler paper at Target, along with a package of pencils. I also found a string of lights that are battery powered to put in the jar. I gathered the papers from Cardstock Warehouse Cardstock Papers and used my electronic die cutting machine to choose some school-themed images. You can choose whatever die cut images you have available to you.

Tools to gather: Scissors, your favorite adhesive, ink pad and dauber.

CREATING THE PENCIL TOPPERS

I knew I wanted one side of the toppers to be a solid color so that I could stamp or write sentiments on them. So I took each template, traced them once on the solid cardstock, then flipped them, (mirrored image), and traced them on the printed cardstock. I traced the owl shape on the patterned paper, then flipped it, mirror image, and traced it on the green cardstock. I also traced the leaf shape, for the wings, on the green cardstock, then flipped it, mirror image, and traced again. The leaf template is just enough different, that I didn’t want them facing the same way.

I constructed the pencil shaped topper entirely from cardstock. I traced parts of the arrow template for the body of the pencil. Again, I flipped the template and traced it. I then traced the arrow part for the “wood” part of the pencil on the cherrywood cardstock. Not pictured: I traced the “lead” part of the pencil on the onyx and cut out little notches to make it look like it was sharpened. I cut 2 small strips from the bubblegum cardstock and used a corner round on just 2 sides to make it look like an eraser. I then cut 2 small strips from the Gold Touch cardstock to make it look like the metal band on a pencil. See the finished pencil up close.

Once my toppers were completed and assembled, I put the pencil eraser part of the pencils between the 2 layers and closed them as best I could with my adhesive. I put the battery operated string of lights inside of the jar and it’s complete!
