I love making custom party hats!! Party hats make great party favors or even just a special one for the birthday boy or girl!! Summer always makes me think of picnics and watermelon, so I am continuing my watermelon party theme from last month's blog. I would love to show you how I made this one for a “watermel-ONE” party hat. So let's get started on how to make it!
Supplies:
- Cardstock Warehouse Cardstock Paper
- Lessebo Colours 83lb
- Pitch Black
- White
- Lime Green
- Kelly Green
- Bubblegum
- Flamingo
- Glue/ Hot glue gun
- Ribbon or Elastic String (for string the hat)
- Pom Pom or Tissue Fringe (for decorating top of hat)
- Pop Dots
- Hole Punch
- Cutting machine
- Cutting files:
Start by uploading your cut files to your electronic cutting machine. I am using a Cricut, and got the party hat, watermelon slice, and ant from Cricut Design Space. I am also using the watermelon numbers linked above from Creative Fabrica. I chose the Lessebo Colours paper line to make this project because they are such cute colors and they die cut like a dream!
Now let's start on the hat! Fold the score line along the tab, form your hat into a cone shape and glue the tab to the inside of the hat. Use a hole punch to punch two holes on either side of the hat to string your hat through. (I punched these before I rolled the hat up, but it's easier to get the placement right if you wait until after you roll it up.) Finally, put the spring through the holes, tie a knot on the end of the string, and then hot glue the end of the string inside the hat. This will ensure that the string doesn't come off when you stretch the string later.
Now let's get our embellishments ready! I started by gluing together the layers of the number one. I used liquid glue to assemble these layers. Then, I used liquid glue to layer together the pieces of the watermelon slice. Finally, I used foam pop dots to attach the watermelon slice and ant to the number one. This gives the embellishments some nice dimension! Normally I wouldn't be excited about bugs, but I just think this little ant is too cute!
I used strips of tissue paper to create a cute little fringe pompom and hot glued it to the top of the hat. Finally, I hot glued the number to the front of the hat. And now you're done! Your adorable party hat is ready to use!
